Practical guide

Create SRT or VTT subtitles from a video

By the ClairTexte team

Upload your video, start transcription, correct the text and export SRT or VTT subtitles. A subtitle file contains text and timestamps and remains separate from the video.

Choose between SRT and VTT

SRT contains numbered subtitle cues with a start time, end time and text. WebVTT begins with the WEBVTT header and uses a full stop for milliseconds. It is commonly used for text tracks in web players. Choose a format supported by your editor or publishing platform.

Technical reference: W3C WebVTT specification.

Generate and export your subtitles

  1. Open your workspace and upload the video. Check the file size and duration allowed by your offer.
  2. Start transcription to obtain text with timestamps.
  3. Replay unclear passages, edit the text and save your changes.
  4. Download the SRT or WebVTT file from the export options.
  5. Import it into your video player or editor and watch the video with subtitles enabled.

SRT and VTT exports do not burn subtitles into the picture. To make text permanently visible in the video, use a video editor that can import and burn in subtitles.

Review readability and timing

Accurate text alone does not guarantee readable subtitles. Check that each phrase stays on screen long enough, does not obscure important visual information and follows the speech. Your editing tool may let you shorten lines and adjust timestamps.

ClairTexte timestamps come from the transcription. Major edits or moved words need a playback check. Automatic punctuation may not reproduce the speaker’s exact rhythm.

Create subtitles in another language

You can translate the transcript into French, Arabic, English, Spanish, German, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch or Turkish. When a translation is displayed, exports use that text. The audio and timestamps remain those of the original recording. Check names, idioms and sentence length in the target language.

Active paid packs remove the daily translation quota. Technical length limits and abuse protections still apply; a very long transcript may not be translatable in a single request.

Frequently asked questions

Are subtitles added directly to the video?

No. ClairTexte exports a separate SRT or VTT file. Import it into a compatible editor to burn the text into the video.

Can I correct the subtitles?

Yes. Edit and save the text before exporting. Use a subtitle or video editor for finer adjustments to display times.

Does translation change the audio?

No. It translates the displayed text. The audio and timestamps remain those of the original recording.
